All Malkin

from Dmitry Chesnokov at PuckDaddy,

What do you think about Ovechkin’s comments about him leaving the NHL to play in Sochi (2014 Winter Olympics)? Will you join him?

There is nothing to add to what he said. I completely agree with Alex. I have exactly the same opinion. We even spoke to each other about it on one occasion. That’s why I agree. This is my dream [to play in Sochi]. Especially because this is going to take place in Russia. There is a buzz over there already. And if I am in good form, if I am a candidate for a roster spot, and if I am invited, there is no way I will refuse.

What if the NHL tells you that you can’t go? What if there will be some sanctions?

I would rather pay fines and still go. If there is something serious like a disqualification for a couple of years in the NHL, if there is something like this I will probably still go because I can even leave to Russia to play. It is very difficult to say right now. But I can give you 100% that I will go [to Sochi].

There’s going to be a new CBA before the 2014 Olympics and they’re going to have to address this.  I know the Olympics bring a lot of pain in the ass for North American teams, but the league can’t continue to pretend like a large portion of its fanbase doesn’t care how they treat international superstars.

I have a feeling they are going to have to back off the “we’re done with this after the Vancouver games” stance they’ve taken, much to the chagrin of Don Cherry.

I’m glad to see the two most recognizable international stars stand firm on their intent to play in the Sochi games.  I’d like to see a few Swedes, Finns, Czechs, Slovaks, Americans, and Canadians chime in on this as well.  Although, I’m not sure it will be all that important as long as they have Ovechkin and Malkin on that side.  Punishing them for playing in the Olympics would be a horrible idea for an NHL that’s trying to expand their overseas fanbase.

How about a new NHL commissioner before the 2014 Olympics?

Uh oh, this could be problematic.
These guys are really saying what they mean. No politically correct answers. That’s a nice change.
