All Numbers

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,

But numbers tell some stories. Here’s a look at the NHL’s first five weeks by the numbers starting play Thursday unless noted:

Minus 11: Brad Richards plus-minus for the Tampa Bay. He’s generally recognized as a star, and he’s earning $7.8 million per season and he has the second-worst plus-minus in the league. In fairness, he is the only forward in the NHL playing an average of more than 25 minutes per game.

12,000: The Predators’ estimated average attendance this season. They need 14,000 to make the team work in Nashville.

much more...

Richards doesn’t exactly have the best linemates on most nights (Jan Hlavac? Michel Ouellet? *Shudder*) so it’s not surprising he’s -10 (as of today). That he’s got 17 points in 16 games is impressive.

The fact he’s also playing over 25 minutes a night indicates he’s also out there in defensive as well as offensive roles. That’s a punishing pace, especially on a weak defensive team like the Lightning.

It also shows that the Bolts are overplaying their top players (Richards, Lecavalier and St. Louis) again, and if this team makes the playoffs they won’t have anything left.

I looked at the All Star ballot and noticed something really odd.  They put Ray Emery on the Ballot but not Gerber!  What the heck?  I guess this is reward for last season but isn’t the All Star game supposed to reflect this season?  Either way, I should hope that Gerber does get it in some form considering that Emery has given up half the goals Gerber has but has played in 1/4 of the games
