All Over The Hossa Talk

George Malik of SnapShots at Mlive points to numerous sources regarding Hossa and other Wings,

As we stand about seventeen hours from the start of the unrestricted free agent period, my best educated guess suggests that Marian Hossa will sign somewhere else between 12 and 2 PM tomorrow, with Mikael Samuelsson and Ty Conklin soon to follow, Tomas Kopecky to last until July 3rd at the latest, and I expect someone to toss a $2.5 million offer sheet at Jiri Hudler before the week’s out.

When does the “you can be over the salary cap by x%” start?  I thought it started on July 1st.  That’s why I figured a deal wasn’t done. . . but I’m definitely unsure as to whether that is already in effect or not.

I think you can be over the cap by some percentage as long as the team is in compliance by opening day. Probably the Wings don’t want to go over for the sake of going over because once they get under the cap number they still have to ice a full roster.  It isn’t as though they have a useless albatross of a $6 million contract that they plan on waiving or burying in the minors or something over the summer.

I just looked it up, it’s 10% over the cap after July 1st.  So, while you’re probably right, I’m not sure they’d be cap compliant until tomorrow for the contract to go through even if it was signed.  Still unlikely, but we’ll see I suppose.

Someone in the east is going to pick up 75% of these guys (not on the same team mind you).  I could see hudler on a team like washington; I could see conklin anywhere (bringing his curse with him; 0-3 as far as I know); I have no clue what’s in hossa’s mind but I’m sure he’s picked up a curse of his own (0-2) probably the Rangers (ugh…) what with the salary dump.  Samuelsson will probably find a job on a west coast non-contender or the khl.  I’ve never seen kopecky play so I can’t comment…but there are lots of teams looking for defensemen (as usual)...

Hey pittsburgh…go reverse hossa on hudler?!?...if you don’t sign scuderi.
