from Jeff Z. Klein of Slap Shot,
Pat Sajak, who celebrated his 30th anniversary as the host of the game show “Wheel of Fortune” last week, holds another proud distinction: he has attended every N.H.L. Winter Classic. He plans to be in the crowd at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia on Monday, when the Flyers host the Rangers in the fifth annual outdoor event.
Q. You and your son, Patrick, have been to every Winter Classic. Can you give us a capsule review of each one?
A. Buffalo was a perfect snow-globe kind of day. There were 70,000 people in the stands, temperature in the 30s, a sprinkle of snow. The N.H.L. struck gold — it was as if they’d brought in a Hollywood set designer to do it. Then Chicago, Wrigley Field. For an event in its second year, it felt like it was in its 50th year — it had become a tradition that quickly. In Boston, it was the same feeling. What strikes me most is that I’ve seen one game in my life at Fenway Park, and it was a hockey game. Pittsburgh last year, the league showed its flexibility by overcoming bad weather, rain and warm temperatures, moved it to night, and it was perfect.
