from Bill McGraw of the Detroit Free Press,
His voice was clear, his spirit strong, his words tinged with humor.
But legendary broadcaster Ernie Harwell had bracing news to deliver Thursday: He has a tumor in the area of the bile duct. It is incurable. Yet Harwell said he feels calm and prepared for what comes next.
“We don’t know how long this lasts,” Harwell said in a phone interview. “It could be a year, it could be much less than a year, much less than a half a year. Who knows?
“Whatever’s in store, I’m ready for a new adventure. That’s the way I look at it.”
Even though this is not a hockey related story, I am sure many of you will recognize the name or voice of Ernie Harwell. Over the past ten years or so, I developed a friendship with Ernie and wish him the best.

I got to meet Ernie years ago at the old Tiger Stadium. Got an autograph, chatted a bit. Genuinely a quality individual, a nice man, and someone who can never ever be replaced. We’ve been trully blessed to have him aroudn for as long as we have.
I origiinally got into radio because of two people—JP McCarthy, and Ernie Harwell.

Ernie Harwell and George Kell will always be the voices of the Tigers for me. It’s no surprise he’s taking such a postive approach to such terrible news. The cancer may kill him, but it will never beat him.

Detroit has truly been blessed all these years with their sports voices.
Thank God for, Ernie Harwell, Bud Lynch, George Kell, Bruce Martyn and many more. It’s funny, even when the teams from Detroit weren’t any/very good, we had broadcasters that made these team fun to listen to anytime. Easy to take them for granted until they retire. I’ve been lucky enough to hear these guys and guys from other cities. New Jersey is lucky with Mike Emerick; Pittsburgh is lucky to have Mike Lang. Chicago has/had Pat Foley. Be thankful what you guys have. All of these guys make/made listening to their broadcasts eventful.
God bless you Ernie. We’ll be praying for you. Thanks for all of the memories.

It was Ernie’s voice that reverberated through my grandfather’s house on any given Summer day. For me, that was the voice of comfort, of everything-is-as-it-should-be-on-this-lazy-summer. Best of luck, Ernie.
