All These Shutouts

from Brian Duff of the NHL Network at NHL.com,

Don’t look now but a dirty word—for some—has sprung back into the game.

SHUTOUT!

And we’re not just talking Martin Brodeur’s milestone Monday night.

We’ve had eight of them in the 23 games played the past three nights. Plus, we’ve also had some very low-scoring games this week.

The scoring average for this week—4.43 goals per game. For the season it’s between 5.7 and 5.8 goals a game.

Possible explanations?

Paul,

Have you watched a San Jose Sharks game recently? With our horrible defence led by Rob (softee) Blake, we will be lucky to ever get a shutout.

Add in Mr. Inconsistant Evgeni Nabokov in goal and the Sharks will be lucky to play a game where they allow under 2 goals.

Is that how many games the Wings have played?
Not funny, really really not.

Possible Explanation #1
4 of the first 5 goalies refered to in the article are under Finnish Influence

Possible Explanation #2
There has been a movement from a Blocking/Quebec Butterfly   to a more Hybrid/Athletic/Actvie butterfly.  Perhaps this has caught up to the more open,  post lockout game

Possible Explanation #3
Many of the names on the list are not iron-men when it comes to minutes in net. Other goalies in this group that were left off of the list are Jaroslav Halak, who is just .006 save% behind Price, and Ondrej Pavelec, who gives the Czechs a strong # 2 for the Olympics.

Are these guys getting ther chance in back to back games?  If true, perhaps the compressed schedule is taking a bigger toll on offensive ouput than it is on goalies.
