Anaheim Hands Over Portland to Buffalo

From the Buffalo Sabres:

The Portland Pirates announced today a new, long-term affiliation agreement with the Buffalo Sabres effective with the 2008-2009 AHL season. The announcement was made by Pirates Managing Owner/CEO Brian Petrovek, Pirates Chairman/Governor Lyman Bullard, Sabres’ Managing Partner Larry Quinn, and Sabres’ General Manager Darcy Regier.

The Anaheim Ducks made the decision to sever its ties with the Pirates earlier this month for reasons of wanting their AHL team in closer proximity.  Looking at the map, I’d have to say Buffalo didn’t share the same concern.

Update 2:47pm ET: And as a commenter just pointed out… the Portland Pirates play in Maine. More coffee for me! Let me kill that map…

I believe the Pirates play in Maine, not Oregon.

The address from their website would seem to confirm they are located in Maine:
Portland Pirates
94 Free Street
Portland, ME 04101

Thanks—and indeed they do. My IQ is apparently on a lunch break while I work.

Scarily enough, this isn’t even the first time I’ve got them mixed up. grin

Easy mistake to make though considering Portland, OR is a much bigger city, and more well known I guess you could say, than Portland, ME.

Alanah, I - as I’m sure most of the KK readers - appreciate the fact that you did not try to cover up the error that was made and that you’ve embraced it!  Most bloggers would simply remove the info and pretend that it didn’t happen!  We also appreaciate the fact that you’ve been updating the site quite early in the am given the fact that you are on the west coast!  You’ve been doing an amazing job at keeping us well informed in Paul’s absence!  Thanks for that!

JMH -- You’re very kind to look at it that way. Still, a pretty stupid mix-up on my part.

Mac -- Thanks for the kind words.  I’m also falling asleep based on EST these days.  It gets disorienting. (Which perhaps I can use as an excuse for future stupidity?) smile

I’d say you were right before the edit.  Their former AHL team was in Rochester, less than an hour’s drive from Buffalo.  Considering how much the Sabres depend on their farm squad to get their good talent (and then not pay for it) and how hard Lindy Ruff worked during the lockout going back and forth between Rochester and Buffalo I think this is a stupid move made by people with too much pride on the line in both front offices.  They’re also alienating a big group of fans in Rochester who watch their favorite Amerks become Sabres and watch the parent club on TV.

Dumb move by the Sabres...but what else is new.

You’d think with all the harping I’ve been doing lately about the lack of hockey in Oregon someone’d listen… grin

Man this sucks.  I’m with expat on this one.  I used to go to Amerk games all the time when I lived in Rochester and became a fan of the Sabres because of the influx of players from Rochester.  Sad to see this affiliation end after so many years.
