And You Call Us A Trapping Team

from Russo’s Rants,

Lemaire thinks of the Vancouver media with about as high a regard as Alex Burrows thinks of Bouchard (if it makes you feel better, I like you fellas).

“You notice there in the third, they’ve got five guys at their blue line and [their media’s] talking about our trap?” Lemaire said. “That’s a new trap.”

The Canucks media often interrogate Lemaire on the Wild’s style, which Lemaire abhors.

more on the Canucks/Wild game and Luongo’s 3rd consecutive shutout (he hasn’t been scored upon since Brodeur went down, coincidence?)...

Maybe Russo’s next rant could be on pronoun agreement.

I think it’s actually okay.  Awkward, but okay.  The “abhor” refers to the iterrogation, not the style.

A reasonable person familiar with the principals can figure that out, but that doesn’t make it proper English. Pretend for a moment that you don’t know Lemaire is the coach of the Wild, then see if you still think it’s okay.

At best it’s ambiguous, at worst it’s entirely contrary to what the author intended. The general rule is that a pronoun is associated with the closest precedent matching its number/gender. A professional writer such as Russo should know that.

I’m done nitpicking now.
