Andreychuk Waived- This Time It Is True

WDAE reporting Andreychuk will be waived at noon today.

update 11:55am, via WDAE,

The Tampa Bay Lightning have waived team captain Dave Andreychuk.
At a press conference held at the St. Pete Times Forum Tuesday, the team announced they have placed Andreychuk on waivers at noon Tuesday. If Andreychuk clears waivers, he will be assigned to the AHL Springfield Falcons. Andreychuk can then, if he wishes, retire and claim the money owed to him in his contract. Andreychuk signed a two-year deal with the Lightning prior to the 2005-06 season.

update 12:17pm, from the Tampa Bay Lightning,

“When we entered into the contract with David this summer, both sides did so in good faith, recognizing that no one would work harder in the summer preparing for the new season than David,” Lightning Executive Vice President & General Manager Jay Feaster said.

update 1:44pm
, from Kara Yorio of the Sporting News,

The NHL says goodbye to Dave Andreychuk today. No team could possibly find a reason to claim him on waivers. Let’s choose to remember his playing career with the image of him jumping up and down with the Stanley Cup over his head and not the struggling anachronism we saw through the first half of this season.

Welcome to the ‘dog eats dog’ world where GM’s have no obligations to players. I don’t understand why NHLPA doesn’t make any actions.

Mess in NJ, now it’s TB.

It sets a precedent to pick an expensive player like Gonchar before deadline and trash him after playoffs. Why not? If team Captain was trashed, it’s way easier (morally) to do it to a borrowed player.

It’s almost as if the GM’s are now saying, we screwed up and overpaid for your services, which is now messing up our payroll under the cap, and for all your years of service (Mogilny, Andreychuk) you can either play out your contract in the minors or retire!  It’s embarrasing!

I don’t understand why people are having such a hard time with stuff like this.  This is exactly how the NFL works and very few fans complain about it.

I am not saying it is right.  Just the opposite in fact, I don’t like how the NFL treats it players either.  But why is this any different?

There needs to be a way for teams to release players with no or minimal cap impact instead of waiving them and retaining their rights, forcing them to play in the minors or retire. The players should be able to receive their full pay and become UFAs.

The thing is with the NFL, you rarely see this sort of thing happen midseason.  Look at Jerry Rice, he was brought in by Denver but couldn’t make the grade so he was let go in camp.  I understand that the game has changed, but for a team to do this midseason to their captain is crazy.  Not that it would be any better, but if it were a Joe Schmoe it would be a little more understandable, not your team captain.  I know they are trying to win games, but put the guy on the fourth line and let him be a leader in the room and after they season tell him to graciously retire!
