Another Day, More Crosby Reports

from CTV News,

Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby’s concussion symptoms have returned, and he may not be ready for the start of the NHL season, sources have told CTV Atlantic.

The Cole Harbour, N.S., native has not played a game since January 5, 2011, after he suffered his second hit to the head in less than a week.

Sources say Crosby’s concussion symptoms returned last week and he cancelled all of his scheduled on-ice workouts at a Halifax-area rink.

An AP report at ESPN says not true, according to Crosby’s agent Pat Brison who said his training has been adjusted to meet his needs for recovery..

added 9:58pm, from Matthew Sekeres of the Globe and Mail,

Though it sounds as if Crosby’s camp is circling the wagons and concealing another setback, a concussion specialist said it is possible for athletes to experience symptoms months after the injury without necessarily suffering a setback.

Dr. Mark Aubry, the chief medical officer of the International Ice Hockey Federation and Hockey Canada, said it’s not that unusual for symptoms to linger up to two years, and to return when the injured athlete attempts to exercise.

“There will always be a small percentage of players … where the concussion symptoms will last longer than expected,” said Aubry, an Ottawa-Gatineau physician. “Some will settle overnight, some will last one to two years. There’s a wide range.”

This is not good news for any fan, regardless of which team you root for.

What Kate said….and now you know why (and suspected) Shero and Blysma made statements the way they did.

When I hear that, I pay no attention to it. Usually it’s made up BS.

If you mean the Sekeres article, I’m not so sure what he said is all that positive, especially where he quotes the chief medical officer of the International Ice Hockey Federation and Hockey Canada as saying, “Some [symptoms] will settle overnight, some will last one to two years. There’s a wide range.”

Look at Andreas Lilja. It took him 11 months to recover enough to simply start a conditioning stint with the Griffins. The good news is he’s apparently fully recovered now (or the Flyers wouldn’t have signed him to a two-year contract).

Crosby is obviously getting the best medical advice possible. Let’s hope he follows that and isn’t swayed in a negative way by his natural desire to be back with his teammates again.

If you rush back and get another you’re finished.  This is virgin territory for the medical profession.  Look at all the NFL guys with brain damage later in life.  It’s frightening.  People thought only boxers got punchy.

Perhaps. But there is a significant amount of research and awareness heading in the proper direction. It would be nice to see a cooperative effort with the NHL and NFL to accelerate both by going beyond their current efforts. There are universities across the nation that are integrating neuroscience into their undergraduate and graduate studies.

css I know what you’re saying but…

At this point it seems Shero and Crosby’s agent are the only ones claiming that he’s fine, and even Shero has admitted he really doesn’t know anything.  And it’s worth noting, Crosby himself has not come out and said “Look, these reports are false”.  To me, that means something,

Again, this comes off very much as an attempt to quell panic in PIT so they hope they sell more tickets.  I cannot come up with another reason.

And people wonder why crazy rumors have begun to attach themselves to this situation.

I told myself I wasn’t going to jump on the speculation bandwagon but here I go.

Brisson’s quote, in part…

He has simply adjusted his summer program accordingly to the different needs for the appropriate recovery

...  is about as cryptic as it gets.  Saying he’s fine only takes two words.  This seems to me to be a far cry from saying “he’s fine.”
