Another Grinder May Soon Be Gone

from Michael Happy of FSDetroit,
To anyone outside of Detroit, it probably sounds obscene.
But to those of us in Hockeytown, there’s nothing sexual about the The Grind Line.
The mere mention of it conjures up images of the Red Wings’ fourth line—Joe Kocur, Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby—mucking it up in the corners during a magical run to a Stanley Cup title in 1997.
It was the Red Wings’ first championship in more than four decades. And while the lasting snapshot will be captain Steve Yzerman raising the Cup near center ice as streamers rained down on Joe Louis Arena, another picture perfect comes to mind, too: Maltby battling Colorado’s Eric Messier for a loose puck during the Western Conference finals.

Precisely why he was great at wheat he does-did.
Even gets under the skin of fans of other teams.

gotta say, love the sentiment, but the Chief wrote a far better column 4 days ago on this very subject…
i hope we have one of those fan appreciation nights for him if he does retire, because he won’t get his number retired, but he was a vital part of 4 stanley cup wins

To mention Maltby’s name in the same breath as Kocur, Probie and Mcarty is sacrilege.
Spoken like someone who’s taken a puck or two in the head. Oh. Wait. Got it.

To mention Maltby’s name in the same breath as Kocur, Probie and Mcarty is sacrilege. He is a guy who always wore the visor, never dropped the gloves. Was a class A yapper followed by being a class A turtler.
Good Riddance.
