Anyone Want Jeff O’Neill

via the Globe and Mail,
Last week, we tried to track down the 31-year-old O’Neill to get his thoughts on why he remains unsigned even though he scored 20 goals last season and to find out if there were any clubs interested in his services. But his new agent, Ian Pulver, returned an e-mail that said the two of them felt that it wasn’t in the best interest of O’Neill to do an interview.
Of the 120 players who scored 20 goals or more, only Petr Prucha of the New York Rangers averaged less than O’Neill’s 13 minutes and 43 seconds of ice time. Of the 167 players who matched O’Neill’s 42 points or more, only Michel Ouellet of the Pittsburgh Penguins averaged less ice time than O’Neill.

His fear of flying makes it hard for any Western team to try and sign him, with all the travel they have to do.

Detroit being an exception of course.

His game would play well in Detroit. He was up and down in Toronto, but who wasn’t? Hoping he catches on in Motown.

Yeah I thought about his fear of flying, but I thought he was over that? nobody has mentioned in a while anyway. Last I heard he was in the greatest shape he’s ever been in.

From what Ive heard, he will never be over it and does not want to play for a team that has lots of air travel, like Vancouver, LA, Anaheim, San Jose, etc.

He really hasn’t been with it since his brother was in the accident. I think he can still help out a team who wants him, but he is a player you have to push to work as opposed to one who will do it on their own.

This is one guy I would like to see in a red wings uniform… of course after we find out what kind of talent and production we can get from our own youth, which is why I think he wasn’t offered a contract or a tryout, and the same can be said from other teams. He falls into the category of… “great player, but not great enough for big bucks, and easily replaceable by a youth with league minimum contract”
With that said, the Wings powerplay suffered greatly last season ...21st in the league! O’Neil could fill the void that Shanny left if he were on the powerplay with a setup man like Datsyuk. He would easily have 30+ goals in a Wings Jersey
