Are The Chicago Blackhawks The New Detroit Red Wings?

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

As they prepare to visit the Boston Bruins in our Game of the Week on Thursday night, the Hawks remind us of another team from recent memory, in terms of their ability to produce wins in a variety of settings: the Detroit Red Wings.

Chicago coach Joel Quenneville, never given to hyperbole, seems flattered by the idea that is the outside view, but points out quickly—and accurately—there’s a long way to go between where the Blackhawks are now and what the Red Wings have accomplished in the last decade (winning Cups in 2002 and 2008, reaching the Cup finals last season and piling up no fewer than 108 points in every season since 2000).

“That’s a heck of a compliment,” Quenneville told ESPN.com this week. “I know how good they’ve been and how long they’ve sustained that, and that’s a greater compliment.”

The Wings have been a playoff presence for the past 18 years… the Hawks have a 1 year streak going, and looking to make that 2. They haven’t won the cup since ‘61… and were demolished by the Wings last year. So comparisons like this are laughable until they win a cup or two. Or even make it to the finals. Next please.

Heck yea, they haven’t even threatened to trade their captain yet.

Once they win 4 cups in twelve years, then there can possibly be a comparison.  Until then, STFU

they’ll have to trade him next summer when they offer Bertuzzi a 6 year deal @ 30mil

Good response by Coach Q.  Don’t need to give division rivals and potential first-round matchup any bulletin-board material.

Still, there have been a lot of comparisons to this year’s Hawks and last year’s Wings.  I think they’re just about fair.  After all, they’re just comparisons.  Hawks fans have no reason to believe that their team this year isn’t a strong Stanley Cup contender.  The team has a lot to live up to.

You know what?  The Wings were eliminated early in the playoffs after having stellar regular seasons.  So on second thought . . go ahead.  Compare

And you people want ESPN more invovled with hockey, when they’re putting stuff like THIS out there?

Amazing, isn’t it, how quickly people jump ship.  Last year the Wings were dead and the Pittsburgh Penguins were the new “model team” were they not?

“That’s a heck of a compliment,” Quenneville told ESPN.com this week. “I know how good they’ve been and how long they’ve sustained that but we’re a one-year wonder that will be trading away (or just giving away) a handful of top-talent players just to barely get under the cap next year. So, thanks for the compliment, but the only way we’ll ever be the new Red Wings is if Scotty Bowman convinces Ken Holland to join the Hawks and teach his math-challenged son how to manage the cap.

There. Fixed.

Oh snap. That was more painful because it came from you Paul.

Tell ‘em dude.

The Hawks are playing well, but the playoffs are a different beast. That’s when guys like Sharp and Bufflin (I don’t want to look up the spelling) are most valuable and guys like Campbell most vulnerable.

I’d love a rematch.

Not I.  I hate ESPN, and even more when they attempt and fail at covering hockey.

They are the Detroit Red Wings if they keep winning, making the playoffs, and winning multiple Cups until about 2025.  Not even close yet.

More like the 08-09 bruins: a young team that overachieves in the regular season, exits early in the playoffs and then gets boned by the salary cap in the offseason.
