Are The Rangers A Destination For Heatley?

from Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen,

There may only be days to spare, but it remains to be seen whether the reluctant Senator will actually have to show his face in Ottawa. It would certainly appear that no trade is imminent, but the rumours continue to come at us from all angles.

One that made a lot of sense, and still does, involved the New York Rangers and two of their good, young players, defenceman Marc Staal and forward Brandon Dubinsky.

Senators general manager Bryan Murray has always liked Staal, a big, smart defenceman with ideal family bloodlines. The younger brother of Eric and Jordan Staal (with one more bro to come) makes just $765,000 this season before becoming a restricted free agent.

Unless Malkin, Crosby or Ovechkin is coming the other way the Rangers ARE NOT trading both Dubinsky and Staal

Dubinsky and Staal for Crosby, Malkin or Ovie? wow. so instant quality play is exchange for average and delayed maturation that could turn out to be nothing more than mediocre? sounds fair. gotta love homers.

Jump to conclusions much? The Pens would be out of their minds to deal Malkin or Crosby for anything as would the Caps with Ovy, but there is no trade out there where a single forward coming back would be worth it to trade both Dubinsky and Staal for the Rangers.

Don’t you love it when “journalists” play fantasy hockey? How does this deal make any sense for the Rangers? Give up their two low cost top prospects for a player that is a pariah throughout the league at more than twice the price? Besides the Rangers already have a first line scoring winger in Gaborik, but no first line center so they add another high priced wing?

For the record, if you read the article, he actually suggests that a defenseman from Ottawa of the young-but-not-Staal variety would go back, and likely everyone’s favourite $5 million bombshell would wind up in Ottawa for the next three years.

And what about Nash, Iginla, Zetterberg, Thornton, Datsyuk, Lecavalier, Eric Staal, Getzlaf, etc? There’s far more than those three who would make you think twice about holding on to Brandon and Marc.
