Arena Named After NHL Mom

from Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer,

The arena in Smithers, British Columbia, where former Flyers defensemen Joe and Jimmy Watson once starred will be renamed Friday.

Not after Joe, who played in the NHL for 15 seasons and became a cornerstone of the Flyers’ expansion franchise in 1967.

Not after his younger brother Jimmy, who played in five all-star games and, like Joe, was a member of the Flyers’ two Stanley Cup champions.

Instead, the honor will go to their 85-year-old, hair-pulling mother, Mary.

That is such a wonderful idea. Hockey moms do so much for their kids and others. Having five sons myself, I have spent quite a few hours at the rink with my boys. And isn’t that what it’s all about anyway? I really like the part about the hair pulling.

Really, what a cool story. It’s too bad Jimmy Watson isn’t going to be there.
