640AM in Toronto reports Sean Avery claimed by the New York Rangers.

Out of curiosity- can they not buy out their portion of the Avery contract this offseason?

The Stars can’t buy him out because he’s not on the team anymore. So they’re stuck with that $1.9M per year for the next three years. That’s the equivalent of a pretty good third-line player they won’t be able to sign. And that makes me sooooo sad.

The good news for teams in the Western Conference is that the Stars are now stuck with a $1.9M cap hit for the next three years. Financially, they would have been a lot better off waiting until the season was over and then buying Avery out.
