Atlanta Could Be Destination For Schneider

from Kevin Allen at Mucking & Grinding,
The Atlanta Thrashers are still pondering a move to land a defenseman, and Anaheim’s Mathieu Schneider would seem to be a logical choice if the Thrashers can fit him into their budget.
The Thrashers are only near the $41 million mark, and based on their off-season moves they don’t want to venture too far north of that figure….
Of course the Thrashers would have to convince Burke to probably take Ken Klee ($1.25 million) and another $500,000 player to make it work.
added 12:07pm, from Bob McKenzie of TSN,
When Schneider is dealt, it’s possible it could be rolled out to a larger deal. Some teams have inquired about forward Bobby Ryan’s availability and the truth is Ryan, the second overall pick in the 04 draft behind Sidney Crosby, may be expendable on this Ducks’ roster.

If Burke loses Ryan in order to dump Schneider then he will just be another GM clown who fell in love with his aging prima donna superstars ie (Salanne and Nedemayer). What did those two do for him last year anyway? I still believe they got lucky to beat Detroit and then got to face the phoniest team in NHL history….the Ottawa Senators.

Senshobo, Yes you are right, the 35 yr old rule makes it that unless someone claims Schneider or they trade him, his contract will count against their cap. So if he retires, or if he is sent to the minors, they are still stuck with his contract.

Don’t know where you read it, Hobo, but that’s true. For what it’s worth, it also means his cap hit would last through retirement.

Spoken like a guy who can’t stay up late to watch Duck games.
After Niedermayer’s return in December, the Ducks surrendered nearly a full goal less per game, and forged a 32-12-4 record. They improved from a .500 team to end with the fourth-best record in the league. Selanne is a side issue, as the Ducks need to shed Schneider with or without Teemu, but he’s willing to sign with Anaheim dirt-cheap, and was probably Anaheim’s best forward at the end of last season.

Hey, not many teams can even get the opportunity to get lucky against Detroit, so I don’t figure that’s a bad knock. And as for Ottawa, if you look at their calendar year 2007 (regular season, postseason, and preseason), they lost consecutive games in regulation a total of three times in a full year. Two of those times came in the five-game series against the Ducks. If those results are just the result of phoniness, let me know where I can sign up to get some of that.

I’ll give myself a nice pat on the back for picking out Atlanta.
Then again, picking the teams that still need to spend some money isn’t all that hard. Atlanta needs all the help they can get, I’m surprised they’re being this cheap about Schneider - he’ll be better than just about everyone else on their blueline. I’d be willing to bet this is where Burke’s head is at and wondering why Atlanta is still screwing around with them. I know they don’t have to make a move, but Atlanta is a really bad team that’s still under the salary floor.
Just do it already.

HockeyJoe - Atlanta is not under that salary floor. With all the incentives in Bogosians contract, they’re just above it.
I’d love to see Don pull the trigger on a trade like this:
To Anaheim:
Klee
Sterling
To Atlanta:
Schneider
Ryan

Thanks Earl, I’m glad Sens fans and Ducks fans can find some common ground

Bobby Ryan = overrated.
Matthieu Schneider = overrated and overpaid.

Didn’t I read earlier, contrary to Mackenzie’s notion, that Schneider’s age and multi-year contract prevent it from being removed from the cap by placing him in the minors, possibly from Spector?
