from Craig Custance at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,
On Saturday morning, Waddell officially closed the book on the possibility of signing Hossa before Tuesday’s trade deadline.
“No, I don’t believe so at this point,” said Waddell, when asked if signing Hossa before the trade deadline was a possibility. “We’re going to look at all our options at this point, look at what the market will pay.”
Both Hossa and Waddell described the meeting as a positive one.
a little more…
Even though most of us expected Hossa would not come to terms with Atlanta, at least we know it is now official.
thanks to a KK reader for the heads-up!

with sundin not waiving his clause, i imagine the price for hossa is through the roof. too bad for detroit, but i never thought them to be in the mix, seriously, for his services.

From the next post on Kessel:
With the asking price for Marian Hossa being a young NHLer, a prospect, and a first-round pick . . .
Good Gawd that is a heavy price to pay—even if you could get him to sign an extension.
On the other hand, during the intermission on the Bruin’s broadcast, they noted that for the past three seasons, Hossa is posting a point per game!!

Depending on who the young NHLer and prospects were, I’d pay that for Hossa if he would sign for at least a few years.

That’s hilarious because that’s exactly what the Kings told the Sharks what they wanted for 38 year-old, currently injured Rob Blake.

As Kenny Holland said yesterday, the Wings won’t be interested in a Hossa-type player unless he’s willing to sign a contract extension as a condition of the trade…

BTW, Hossa’s 07/08 Compensation? $7,000,000.00.
Yikes...I don’t think the Wings are willing to fork up Lidstrom money for Hossa unless Donny Waddell is willing to pay part of Hossa’s salary and that would change the whole dynamic of what can we really get for Hossa.

It would be nice SYF, but not allowed by the current CBA.
The Wings could afford him now, since the season is just about over and the salary is pro-rated, but teams can no longer offer to eat some of the contract money.

Thanks, Paul. Then I hazard to guess that in addition to getting Hossa signed to an extension, I take we’d want maybe a pick from the Thrashers as well?
