Attracting A New Audience

from Steve Politi of the Star-Ledger,

The Devils have a new starting goaltender for the first time in 15 years, which is major news in the NHL that no doubt barely created a ripple on the streets surrounding the team’s new arena. Even in their second season in downtown Newark, the Devils sometimes feel like they were dropped in from another planet. Would it be any different if residents found out that new goalie was black?

Would that matter?

Kevin Weekes considered that question Tuesday and decided that, well, it couldn’t hurt. He is an outspoken advocate for diversity in his sport who will take a major role on a team struggling to make inroads in a mostly black city. He is living proof that hockey, despite its reputation, excludes no one.

I really don’t think black people will ever get into hockey….Obama or no Obama. And they certainly ain’t paying $100 to see mostly white guys play. If you’re black and have a choice to go watch the Nets or the Devil what’s it gonna be…? Blacks voted 98% for Obama…I think they’re going to the Nets game.

I live in NJ and get the Star Ledger every morning.  Steve Politi writes exclusively on the big market leagues, and only writes a piece on t he NHL when some sensational event involves a NY/NY teams.  He has demonstrated, time and time again, his utter lack of knowledge on the game of hockey, and an inability to research his articles.  I was not surprised to see this article from Politi this morning.  Most paragraphs in this article could have been lifted from the countless articles written on Weekes’ ethnic background during the past several season as he was on the bench for both the Rangers and Devils.  The one new (and very interesting) angle to the story is the fact that hes in Newark which, as he says, has a large black community; but his article literally has two sentences on this.  What is his justification for this article?  “Hey theres a black guy in the net in a black community in a sport that consists mostly of white fans and players” ...and thats about all the article says.

And ticket prices?  Who buys 100 dollar tickets in ANY hockey market short of canada?  The entire upper deck is about 35 and lower, and there are two 10 dollar sections.  I have never bought a 100 dollar ticket, and I never will;  the top level are fantastic seats, and this is where the most, and best fans sit.
