Avalanche May Have A Dilemma On Their Hands

from Terry Frei of the Denver Post,
The news last week that Quebec City Mayor Regis Lebeaume has commissioned a feasibility study as the first step toward building a new arena caught my attention. I’m both rooting for it to become reality and for the NHL to return to Quebec City.
All the talk seems to concede that, a la the Cleveland Browns, the new franchise would revive the Nordiques nickname. The only reason that would be significant here is that the Avalanche recognizes the franchise’s seasons in Quebec in its records, while not its retired numbers. So if the Nordiques name is revived, the Avalanche would have to decide whether to “return” those franchise records to Quebec too.
more on the Avalanche and their surprising start…

The Avalanche have done everything possible to ignore their history in Quebec. But this is a non-issue.
Despite the NHL heading toward dire financial times, Gary Bettman lacks the foresight to try and move/sell the most unprofitable teams to better markets. Quebec City and Hamilton are the only remaining Canadian markets I feel could actually support an NHL franchise. If only Bettman and the league would recognize that. They won’t until it’s too late and no one can afford to buy a team.
If the tax law on teams are changed, as there is talk of doing, owners will no longer be able to write off operating losses. Market value will plummet. As well, vanity teamsvtunning at a loss would have to be sold unless the owner(s) have very deep pockets.
If ticket demand is the lowest in decades in Toronto, league-wide the demand must be dismal.
