Avery Has A Shadow

from David Kolb at Game On,
It always seems like there is something going on with Avery in the extracurricular realm; however, in-game he’s been the Rangers most important and effective player both down the stretch last year and now during the current playoff push
This is why in this space I will chronicle Avery’s game-to-game activity, be it zany or just productive, from this day until the Rangers either win the Cup, or get eliminated from the playoffs.
Every time he hits the ice, his legs are moving. There’s no standing around or loafing, if you will. His defensive coverage is one of the most overlooked aspects of his game, while on offense he has been nothing less than a sparkplug for the Rangers.

While I agree with you on Drury, K24, goals do not an important player make. Avery does plenty of things that are very important to the team. His leadership and physical presence definitely add a lot to the Rangers, as does his ever-improving two-way play. When he has been injured the Rangers have really suffered, and whether it shows on the scoresheet or not, I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

Personally, I’d love to see Avery back in Detroit. Yah, I know, it ain’t gonna happen. But I think he’s someone who could really embrace the Babcockian way.
Can you imagine a playoff-bound Wings with a line of Avery, D-Mac and Downey? It just makes me giggle thinking about it.

NHLJeff:
I’m not saying that Avery isn’t an important player. He was basically the Rangers’ savior last year. But this writer says that “he’s been the Rangers most important and effective player both down the stretch last year and now during the current playoff push.” I disagree. I think Drury and Dubinsky have been the most important Rangers during this “playoff push.”

Kind of ironic that they’re spotlighting Avery when he’s been avoiding the media for the past 2 weeks. Maybe they think flattery will get him to open up? Chris Drury has been a much more important player for the Rangers during this “playoff push,” despite what this writer says. Even Brandon Dubinsky has been a more effective player than Avery. One 2-goal game does not make him the most important Ranger.
