Avery Responds To Not Playing In Game 5

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

“I totally stand behind what Torts did,” said Avery, who took two mindless penalties in the final 10 minutes of the Rangers’ 2-1 Game 4 victory. “The team comes first.

“I made a mistake. I took two bad penalties. I put the game in jeopardy. It wasn’t something I did intentionally, but that’s no excuse. I did it.

“I realize that Torts is making me a better player. The team always comes first. I’ll do anything for these guys. No one feels worse than me at this point.”

I honestly think this guy may be schizophrenic.

This personality says all the politically correct things.

The other personality talks about “slopppy seconds” and does absurd things on the ice.

Get him on some medication!

wj2j: so let me get this straight… he yaps in front of cameras pre-suspension and that makes him a bad guy, then he stops yapping in front of cameras post-suspension and that makes him schizo?

anyway, if all things were fair, gomez and torts all would sit themselves out for game 6 due to their lack of discipline

W2 can speak for himself, but what I understand him to be saying is that one part of Avery knows what the right thing to do and say is while another part of him can’t help but do and say the wrong things at times. The latter seems to happen most often in situations that are stressful for him.

I see the same thing in guys like Pronger. He sounds quite sensible when he’s off the ice. But in stressful situations on the ice (or when someone makes him look bad on the ice), he resorts to some of the most vicious behavior we see in today’s game. At least Avery recognizes he has a problem.

Pre-suspension and post -suspension has nothing to do with it.

One day he does totally illogical things on the ice that hurt his team.
The next day he is saying things that are totally appropriate.

I may be wrong, but I think this guy can go from one personality (Dr. Jekyl) to another personality (Mr.. Hyde) in a heartbeat.
Is it stress (game) induced?  Maybe.

This behavior is so far beyond what we see in other professional athletes
(although there are lots of pathologic characters there) that I really think a diagnosis is being missed.
(Or, maybe the diagnsis has been made, but it is unsuccessfully being treated.)
