Avs Can’t Open Playoffs at Home

From the Denver Post,

Even if the Avs win the division and are the Western Conference’s No. 3 seed, they will open their first playoff series on the road.

The NCAA’s Frozen Four is at the Pepsi Center on April 10 and 12, and the logistical reality is that the NCAA would have claim on the building from April 9 — the opening day of the NHL playoffs — through April 12.

The NHL has assured Avalanche officials that the team will retain the home-ice advantage in the first round as the No. 3 seed, with four of the seven games played in Denver, if all are necessary. The league hasn’t said how that would work, but it likely would be under a 2-3-1-1 schedule, with the third through fifth and seventh games ticketed for the Pepsi Center.

That’s a thought shared by many, Alanah tongue wink

Perhaps we should start a petition.  I think Ryan Smyth and Peter Forsberg would really appreciate some extra rest… wink

The solution is clear.  If the Avs win their division but can’t open at home, they should be handed a 2-0 lead in the series and head to the opposing teams building to finish them off in 4.  I mean, that seems completely fair and totally realistic to me wink

Actually, I was waiting for some Dive fan to agree they should skip the playoffs…and proceed directly to the Stanley Cup parade.

(Hey, how come there’s no “barfing” smiley?) LOL

I think that if you can’t make your arena available for the opening night of the playoffs, you should simply have to forfeit the game.

Fair enough?  Excellent… so we all agree…. grin

Either that or give the franchise back to Quebec.

Scotty Bowman once commented that he would actually prefer to open a playoff series on the road in some ways.  It was less pressure on the away team because there wasn’t the thought to impress their home fans.

Maybe this would actually be an advantage for Colorado.  Their away record is 16-16-4, so they haven’t been horrible.

Okay, sorry…

How about if they forget the scheduling change, show up at home for the “playoff game,” and wind up getting a loss at the hands of some college kids?

If you really want to get crazy, in your fantasy make it the MSU Spartans with the winning goal scored by Justin Abdelkader - after all, if he is a Detroit draft pick, wouldn’t you like him to get in some practice beating Colorado?  LOL
