Avs Welcome Crosby

from Woody Paige at the Denver Post,

Then there was The Great One. Now it’s The Great, Too.

In their first visits to Denver, the Prodigy Boys scored two goals.

Each. Almost 28 years and 1.8 miles apart.

Sidney Crosby scored two goals in the first period last night at The Can.

Tidy effort.

But Wayne Gretzky scored two goals and added an assist last millennium at Big Mac.

Score two for the local teams, though.

Anecdote about this game:

I am a lifelong wings fan, and shall always be so. However, I have grown to like those highflying pens since the lockout; not just because of Sid Bing Crosby, but the feisty and funny Colby Armstrong, the daunting Ryan Whitney, the lanky Staal, the english of Malkin, the absolute enigma that is Fleury.

Anyway…

I’m watching the game over CI and crosby nets two early goals. Good on ya, sid - Show those hated aves with Claude Lemieux, Patrick Roy, Peter Forsberg, and Adam Foote a thing or two…wait a minute… Well, anyway, once the Aves came back on some extremely odour-emitting goals, the announcers for Altitude were ready to sexually satisfy every Aves player. The cup was immediately on its way to Denver - forget the regular season, forget the playoffs, for Colorado is capable of scoring three goals on Danny bloody Sabourin.

I had grown to have less hate of the Aves: Sakic seems like a respectable guy, they wasted 4.5 billion dollars on the now STD ridden (thanks to Paris) Theodore, and they can no longer fill the Pepsi Centre (the can?!) consistently. Plus, who doesnt love Ryan Smyth. Well, I hate them just as much now as I did then. It’s almost an impression of hockey ignorance that I get from them. First it was the ‘hats off’ to ryan smyth’s non-hat trick incident, which I just took as funny. But now - God, those announcers - it’s almost as though they believe they are in touch with the very form, the logico-essence, of hockey itself. I wonder if contained therein Danny ‘AHL’ Sabourin is winning the Vezina this year. They sure damn celebrated like he was.

Yeah, because Mickey Redmond doesn’t drop to his knees and ### any Wing who so much as skates a lap around the ice without falling down.

*shakes head*

Get a life.

Thomas, I do not appreciate the type of language you used here, so it was edited. -Paul

Ah the rivalry continues, lovely.

I take your argument to be “Your announcer does it to, therefore it is right; or if it is not right, our guy is not entirely wrong because others do it”

1) That Mickey Redmond does or does not give underserved high praise cannot speak to whether or not it is right. This is two wrongs fallacy.

guy 1: You MURDERED X! YOUR MORALLY WRONG!
guy 2: No im not, YOU MURDERED Y!!!

That they both do it does not make it right in either case.

2) Moreover, it could be the case that redmond’s praise is well earned, whereas the praise the ave’s got last night was not.

As an aside: I also liked the ‘get a life’ comment. That there are hockey rivalries assumes that hockey is legitimate. So much coversation arround the sport has to do with whether or not it should even exist: this is unique to hockey. If all that conversation were about some other topic that assumed the legitimacy of the sport, we would be on par with at least basketball in terms of # of persons interested popularity. That we have the richest fan base is our only saving grace at present.

Go Wings.
