from the CP via the Globe and Mail,
Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock says a report that star defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom will succeed retired legend Steve Yzerman as captain is premature.
“I’m not saying Nick Lidstrom won’t be the captain but what I am telling you is that we haven’t spent one second on it yet,” Babcock told The Canadian Press on Wednesday from his off-season home in Saskatchewan. “Anything written about it at this point is pure speculation.”
added 2:12pm, As I have stated throughout the summer, I believe Babcock favors Zetterberg for the “C”. It still may be Lidstrom, but the report earlier today may have been a bit premature.
added 3:15pm, Babcock was just on WXYT, said announcing a captain right now is like throwing a dart at a dartboard. The management team including Yzerman will sit down next week and make a decision. Babcock said he want a captain by the time training camp starts.

It is a distraction now. Helene would not have written what she did without getting the info from someone. Anyone think Jimmy D. was involved?

I agree it is like the red thumb. It’s sticking right out there. Someone, well inside the Wings organization talked.

PS.. If I were Babcock and I was away from the front office or not in contact and this kind of decision was made without my input. Someone would be holding their arse in their hands, cause I would be handing it to them.

I am of the opinion that someone in the organization is trying to undermine Babcock. I have no idea who or why, but that’s what’s going on

Paul: I wouldn’t bet you a nickel ‘cause you’d win it. Jimmy D definitely has a role in this.

I would hope so. Not dissing Babcock but this has gone on way to long. I can’t believe they have not been meeting sooner. I know it’s the off season, but dang this needs a little more thought than just rock, paper scissors. Training camp starts September 7th. Thats 2 weeks away
I guess I find this a little more important than everyone else. I hate distraction and this has all the halmarks of being just that.
