Bad Job By The Refs

from Al Cimaglia of ESPN,

Quenneville commented after the loss that the refs ruined the game by issuing a penalty to Walker at the end of the opening period. I concur to some degree. At the most they could have called offsetting penalties and let cooler heads prevail during the break.

In my view a major problem for the NHL is that officiating from game to game is too scattered. Many times those in the media or fans can overlook the inconsistent actions of officials because their miscues might not directly affect the final outcome. That shouldn’t be the determining factor in judging the performance of officials. A bad job is a bad job even if the final score was not altered because of officiating mistakes….

Unfortunately the young Blackhawks took the Red Wings’ bait time and time again and were whistled for 16 penalties. Chicago players picked the wrong time to jostle after whistles and run around after the Wings. With every penalty the Hawk frustration grew and the Detroit lead seemed to get larger. The overzealous officiating was bad but the Hawks didn’t do much of anything right to deserve a victory….

Maybe next year the referees as well will benefit from mistakes made in this season’s playoffs. Seemingly it is very difficult for NHL officiating to get the right balance and that should be cause for concern.

more on the Blackhawks…

This guy is awful. I don’t know why I keep reading his stuff. Probably so I can insult him.

The refs actually did their job, for once. If you’re upset about Walker specifically being called for roughing, then fine, Kane should’ve been called for spearing Franzen through the pile with the butt-end of his stick.

Most of the media and fan overlook inconsistencies? Not judging by the comments I read here, other blogs and message boards. Judging by what I read media and fans hate hockey, hate the NHL and hate Gary Bettman. In fact so many fans write so vitriolically of hockey it makes me think they aren’t really hockey fans at all.

Al, for once, STFU, and go back to covering whatever else you were covering earlier.  Clearly, NHL hockey is NOT your forte - much like a certain dork in the Detroit MSM who doesn’t care what fans or bloggers think.

There are far too many commentators and “fans” claiming to love the game of hockey while undermining it with statements that only proves their complete ignorance of the sport. Sometimes the supporters of hockey appear to be its greatest enemies.

Yes, there’s inconsistant officiating that needs to improve and Colin Campbell’s magic 8-ball for suspensions should be replaced by something a bit more transparent and logically constructed. And no, there are no conspiracies. And yes, the new NHL is far better than the old one despite its faults. No, the Bible says nothing of Canada being entitled to at least seven hockey teams. Yes, Bettman can be right about something… occasionally.

Feel free to add to the list…

Not ‘conspiracies’ Moq… just cases where the league ‘nudges’ series from time to time.

“Bad” officiating put the Wings down a man for five minutes in Game 3 and they still came back to tie the game. If the Hawks were a playoff-quality team, they would have overcome “the worst call in all of sports history” (or whatever the hell Quenneville called it) and they would have made a game of it on Sunday. Instead, they followed their coach’s lead and acted like a bunch of five-year-olds. The end result? They got creamed by a team that came to play hockey. Oh, well. Too bad.

Maybe next year they’ll have a vague understanding of what it takes to make it to the finals. And maybe they’ll also have a coach who has a snowball’s chance in hell of beating the Wings in the playoffs. Hey, it could happen. Or not.
