Bad Spin, Ms. Hill

via Jemele Hill at ESPN Page 2,
Over the last year, we’ve seen the Hook Up perverted in so many ways. So many athletes attained the Hook Up, meaning they could do no wrong in the public’s eyes and even if they did, they’d be forgiven faster than you can say “Britney Spears is the white Whitney Houston.”...
Wayne Gretzky: Best player of all time, but coaching and part-owning the Phoenix Coyotes has yielded little for that franchise. The NHL didn’t even lift an eyebrow when the Great One was implicated in a gambling ring which his wife, Janet Jones, and former Coyotes general manager Michael Barnett. Nope, not a bad idea at all to have a guy associated with a gambling ring coaching and owning a professional hockey team.

*sigh*...
I’d wager that she got all the attention she needed/wanted by writing that tripe.

Gretzky wasn’t actually implicated in the gambling ring at all. Seems she’s since changed the column to say ‘his name was brought up’(likely fearing a libel suit.)
Even after that change, though, the grammar is still not correct.
Which they were what, exactly, Ms. Hill?
She obviously wasn’t following the media in Canada if she thinks Gretzky’s name wasn’t muddied, especially considering he didn’t actually do anything illegal.

Thanks for pointing out that change Ms. Hill made Darrell.

a) Maybe putting a hockey team in Phoenix wasn’t the greatest idea, but hockey wouldn’t be in Phoenix today without #99. I for one hope Wayne can guide the Desert Dogs to a playoff spot (just not at the expense of my flickering Flames)
b) Ms. Hill seemed to go quite out of her way to dredge up this story that’s almost two years old now. Oh well, she writes/works for ESPN, taking shots at hockey is what they do best (aside from Bucci).
