from Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News,
“It was a new frontier that I had a new chance to explore,” (Barry) Smith said Wednesday. “I wasn’t going to be a mercenary and go there for the money. I wouldn’t have done that. It is a new frontier in hockey. You’re seeing what happens with the new league and the new process of North Americans.”
The league had its hiccups, but it’s growing. On his first road trip, his team was forced to walk a mile from its plane to catch a bus after a bomb scare at the airport. On his second road trip, the team hotel caught fire and, with no fire department nearby, was extinguished by employees.
“It was like walking into 1950,” he said with a laugh.

Hey, Paul, the link to the story is off by just a bit. It should be: http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/columns/story/388909.html
IMHO, the Bolts picked the wrong Barry to coach their team. They could have chosen “class” but instead chose “flash.” Shame on them for overlooking the game’s best coach not already coaching in the NHL.
Quite frankly, the biggest bonehead move the organ-I-zation ever made was hiring Dave “The Statue” Lewis to coach the team when Scotty left. It still gives me the “willies” thinking about him standing behind the bench and wondering if it wasn’t just a cutout figure propped up there. He was a great assistant, but as a head coach...not so much.
I hope the classy Barry gets his chance to caoch a team in the NHL sooner than later.
