Be Careful With The Winter Classic

from Cam Cole of the Vancouver Sun,
It begins each fall with a trickle of e-mails from National Hockey League public relations - a notice here, an advisory there, a teleconference upcoming. The leaves haven’t even begun to turn and already the league is fuelling up the hype machine surrounding the Winter Classic.
By December 1, the volume of promotional material reaches flood proportions, as if the actual regular-season games taking place among teams who have not been designated this season’s chosen ones are merely bouts on the undercard, preliminaries to the main event.
The Winter Classic has been such a runaway success story that it has rendered the meaningless, charisma-free NHL all-star game even more vapid, completely burying it as an item of any significance on the league calendar.

Cam,
You’re starting to sound like Gary Bettman. After the overwhelming success of the first Winter Classic in the States (Buffalo) he said that the NHL might want to do it “every second year so that it didn’t lose it’s novelty”. Are you kidding me! You know what kind of a money maker this is for the NHL. Ticket prices at Wrigley averaged about $200 per ticket. Merchandising was through the roof in Chicago and Boston. TV numbers were incredible. New Years day used to belong to Bowl Games in the US. Now it’s the Winter Classic that Americans (with demographics advertisers crave) want to see. I say do one in the States and one in Canada every year. Just keep them separated by a month. Can’t wait for the New York Rangers to play the Devils or Islanders in the not too distant future.
