Believe It- NHL Drawing More Than The NBA

from PN of SuperSonic Soul,
I am not a hockey fan, despite the fact that I am an American living in Canada. In fact, were you to tell some of my friends up here that people now believe me to be an NHL fan, they would spit out their Tim Horton Timbits quicker than Ben Johnson at Seoul. I hate the NHL, I hate hockey, I hate people who say that hockey players are the greatest athletes alive, and I hate it when sportswriters couch their racism inside melodious descriptions of “gritty” and “tough” hockey players….
Do you know anyone who plays hockey? Did your high school have a hockey team? Do you and your friends get together for pick-up hockey on Saturdays?
I’m guessing the answer to those questions is no all around. And yet, despite basketball’s inherent advantages over hockey in terms of popularity in the U.S., here we stand, with hockey drawing more people this year. How is this possible?
more and I am pointing to the homepage and suggest you read the last 4 or so posts. The author is a basketball fan, but shows a graph of the NHL out-drawing the NBA and is looking for answers on how to improve the NBA.
added 2:08pm, I see Puck Daddy had this topic earlier today, so make sure to check it out…

Damn…please, PN. Before you suck anymore, actually lace up a pair of skates and give it a spin. There’s nothing better than skating faster than you can run.
And with equipment on as well. I’ll take Draper’s speed on the ice in practice over Kobe Bryant’s showboatin’ ass-high falutin’ dunks everyday.

If you’ve ever seen an NBA player on skates…..its pretty sad. However, this article doesn’t really say much. The attendance #s are all based on the NBA capacity. The capacity for hockey is ALWAYS smaller than basketball in the same arena. Plus some teams just have bigger arenas. If Edmonton had more seats they would have a higher attendance figure. Plus there are freebie tix in both sports. The Nets are giving away free tix to 1,500 unemployed people in New Jersey for instance. I’d like to see a % of capacity based on each sports’ capacities. That might be intersting but it would probably be very similiar. The fact is there are 5/6 teams in both sports doing poorly. This will always be the case. At the end of the day it comes down to total revenues and the NBA will always win due to their TV contracts….

The only interesting aspect of this is his admission that basketball has huge advantages over hockey in the USA. Yet the NHL is pretty much even with the NBA. That says alot about NBA basketball in my opinion…...

lol @ NBA
I gave up the NBA years ago and became an NHL fan. I’m a hockey nut now..I love it!!
I just got an old friend into hockey who was a supposedly die hard knicks fan. He has not missed a Ranger game all year and when I ask him about the Knicks he has almost no clue about them.
wooohooooo!!!

Hmm, yeah, I answered yes to those questions, not no, but that’s probably why I’m reading KK. Either way, his blog was very interesting. Though I have to disagree with one thing—NHL players are the best all-around athletes of the “four major sports”.
No other sport combines the need for different athletic abilities than hockey. Sure, you have to have a stronger upper body and have to be able to take consistent punishment more in football than hockey. And for baseball you have to rely on hand-eye coordination more from second-to-second. And in basketball, you have to have to be able to go 35+ minutes of endurance instead of 20ish minutes. But hockey requires you to be proficient in ALL of those areas to be successful.
