The Bruins have made some stupid moves in free agency. Trading Ward, signing Morris and Ryder (last year), and they have no room to sign Kessel.

I would like the signing, only because that means the Wings would have an inferior roster when compared to my Bruins (yeah, i am biased). But still, compared to Chicago, Blues, or Penguins, the Wings aren’t going to have it easy this year.
a) No, it doesn’t at all mean that the Wings have an inferior roster to the Bruins.
b) Chicago? The Blues? Chicago replaced Havlat’s full season with a half season of Hossa, didn’t address their blueline and lost their good goalie. The Blues? Um, right…
Bwaaaa haaa haaaaa…
Carolina.
HAH!!! Well done.

Hey like i said, i was biased toward the Bruins and they are making good progress. We’ll see how far your Wings get this year, they lost a whole 4th line.
As for the other teams mentioned - Chicago, Blues, the talk is they are better/stronger. But until we see how they season goes, how well they play together, they may turn out to be nothing after all. Similiarly, the Wings may play really well, however i just don’t think they are going to be as strong, and i like that so my team(s) can advance further. Bertuzzi has shown no improvement in the last few years. I also think the Wings are putting too much hope in career rebounds with Williams, Eaves, and Bertuzzi. I don’t know why Wings don’t promote the younger talents instead and save some money for the trade deadline if they are going strong, but Holland’s hands are tied with the cap.
Gary Bettman’s salary cap = Obamanomics: Spread the misery equally. And with the cap in place, that’s what’s happening. I don’t particularly like it, but hey if someone has to reach the top, may as well root for my Bruins.
My opinion of what the Wings have done so far, sign Eaves = good risk. Williams is questionable. Bertuzzi, not so much.

Well, if you’re a Bruins fan, then the quality of Detroit’s team has nothing to do with how far your team will advance.
I also think the Wings are putting too much hope in career rebounds with Williams, Eaves, and Bertuzzi.
Really? What hope? They’re signed for $1.5, 500K and $1.5. That’s two guys making the same amount as Kris Draper and one guy who is making more than ONE guy on the team: Derek Meech.
They’ve all been signed as 3rd and 4th liners. What’s the risk?
And for the record, I agree that the Eaves signing was the best of the three, but anyone who thinks that Williams has more potential upside than Bertuzzi is delusional…

I dont see the big fuss about Bertuzzi signing for 1.5. Bertuzzi may not be the “almost” 50 goal scorer he was back during the wce-era. But he is still a very effective player if used properly. He can play on the 1st/2nd/ or 3rd line and still be a force. 1.5 is IMHO very little for a player of his caliber. Taylor Pyatt made that last year.

Garth,
You bring up a good point, Wings will still likely have Draper, Maltby and Meech. Maltby has served his time, done good in the past, but he’s increasingly becoming dead weight on the team. Draper still has value for faceoffs, defense, some speed, but seemed to be losing a step. Meech well, he’s ok to fill a hole with minimal amount of time on ice but I’d want Helm in over him.
So there, Eves, Williams, Bertuzzi are cheap bodies to fill holes while keeping Meech and Maltby may open another holes. Put some young guys in already! Helm, Leino, Abdelkader - did they not earn roster spots by now? Season hasn’t started yet so maybe Helm will beat out Meech.
And as for the quality of Detroit’s team not affecting the Bruins, yeah, not directly. But i’m glad Wings took Bertuzzi off the market since Bruins can’t seem to fix the Kessel situation, and won’t fill his slot with Bert. : ) And if the Bruins happen to reach the final against Detroit, then yeah, i’ll still be happy you have Bertuzzi, Williams, Eaves, Meech and Maltby.

I don’t like the guy, but he certainly replaces some of the depth they lost.
It’ll also help make Avs Wings games a bit more interesting than last seasons.

Helm, Leino, Abdelkader - did they not earn roster spots by now?
Helm and Leino definitely. From what I’ve read, the plan has always been to have Abdelkader play in GR for another season, the way Helm did last year.
And if the Bruins happen to reach the final against Detroit, then yeah, i’ll still be happy you have Bertuzzi, Williams, Eaves, Meech and Maltby.
Well, if Detroit reaches the finals, there’s very little chance that Meech is playing. And if Detroit reaches the final, then you can be damn sure that Williams, Bert and Eaves have done something right, so I wouldn’t jump for joy just yet ![]()
Draper still has value for faceoffs, defense, some speed, but seemed to be losing a step. Meech well, he’s ok to fill a hole with minimal amount of time on ice but I’d want Helm in over him.
Draper’s a fourth line/PK faceoff man. He does fine for that role. If’d be worried if he was the 2nd or 3rd line centre, but he’s not.
As for Meech, he’s a 7th D-man. That’s it. He’ll fill in if someone is hurt or if Lebda plays himself into the doghouse, and he might fill in as a forward if Detroit has a couple minor injuries at at time. That’s about it.
