From Adam Proteau at The Hockey News,
The Top Five Worst Hockey Films Ever Made (in reverse order)
5. Youngblood The acting performances in this 1986 movie are more wooden than ever some 22 years later; and any movie that foreshadowed the dramatic contributions that would be made by Rob Lowe, Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze is a cautionary tale for all casting agents. In fairness, any movie with the line “Go hump your St. Bernard, scum-nuts” in it can’t be all bad.
read on for more bad movie flashbacks, plus Proteau’s take on the best hockey movies.
Incidentally, I’m starting to think I’m the only person on earth who didn’t like the movie Miracle.

I really liked Mystery, Alaska, too. But geez, Baroque, you HAVE to see the original Slapshot. Like it or not, I think it’s a requirement for hockey fandom, or something.

I hated Miracle also! The movie is cheesy water-down crapola. It used skates and helmets and stuff that were not even in use in 1980. It mis-portrays events in the game against Russia, in particular the third Russian goal, which in actuality came on a breakaway as opposed to someone plowingd own Jim Craig. And also, it pays no attention whatsoever to whether or not any given player was actually a right-handed or left-handed shot--see Kenny Morrow. That movie was a disgrace of American propoganda.
P.S. I play for (gasp gasp groan) United States of America (gasp gasp)

Yeah, I hated that movie quite a bit. It was a bigger version of the Mighty Ducks movie without the excuses.

Mystery, Alaska is a better flick than I thought it’d be.
Slapshot is the sports movie all other sports movies are destined to be compared to. I forced my wife to watch it with me earlier this season, so she could finally “get it”.
As for Youngblood… it’s fine for some mindless entertainment. And it’s a riot to see those guys in their younger years…

I saw Miracle with a bunch of friends, so I’m actually not sure of how much of the “like” is because of the movie and how much is because of the company, though - it’s not like I loved it, but I didn’t think it was all that bad.

The best hockey movie ever is “Net Worth”. It is about the formation of the NHLPA and gives an inside view of how things were run back in the day. Kinda like how Gary.Ass is screwing around right now with the Rangers. It is by far the best hockey movie I have ever seen. It’s an oldie and if I’m not mistaken, was a CBC made for T.V. film. I’ll find out where to get it. My own version is on a vcr
tape, that’s how old it is.

I liked Miracle too, but it probably helps that 1) I’m American, and 2) I was born the year after it happened, so it didn’t distort history I lived through.
I’ve only seen the first 20 minutes or so of Slapshot. I want to see the rest, not because it “drew me in,” but because I want to see what all the fuss is about.

You can now find Net Worth on DVD. It is really worth watching.

I liked Miracle.
I also liked Mystery, Alaska.
Never saw Slapshot and I haven’t heard anything that makes me want to see it - not my type of movie.
I can’t even wrap my mind around Keanu Reeves and Jean-Claude van Damme in hockey movies - thank the hockey gods at least they weren’t on film at the same time. *shudders in horror*
