from Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch,
The events of the past four weeks will best be gauged a few seasons down the road. For now, The Dispatch offers this analysis of the proceedings:...
Best bargains
1. Andrew Brunette, LW, Minnesota—A 70-point player with sniper skills, making $2.5 million the next two seasons and $2 million in 2010-11.
2. Niklas Hagman, LW, Dallas—An in-your-face player with lots of upside and a deceptive scoring touch, he’s coming off a 27-goal season. He’ll get $3 million annually the next four seasons.
3. Cory Stillman, LW, Florida—A 20-goal scorer with a great touch on the power play. He’ll make about $3.6 million per season.

This writer also sees the Canucks as a favorite for last place (John Tavares sweepstakes)? That’s ridiculous. Roberto Luongo alone will keep that from happening. I don’t see the Canucks as a playoff team, but they should be far from last.

Minnesota had one of the best off seasons by adding “scoring” with Nolan and Torres is part of the step forward for the BJ’s?
I think you can stop reading by the end of the first section…

I love how it is Ray Shero’s fault that Marian Hossa and Ryan Malone didn’t want to return. Both made that obvious. At least with Malone they received a 3rd round pick for him leaving. I think that was a great move. Not to mention he is overpayed. Honestly, as a Pens fan, this is basically what we expected.
And Cory Stillman a steal at 3.6 million….i could think of a lot of ways to spend 3.6 that doesn’t involve the words overrated, overpayed, underperforming.

No way should Chicago be #1 on the list. They have handcuffed themselves with contracts, now and for the future. How is that a good offseason. Detroit should be #1. Tampa should also be off the list as most of those contracts are one way. I think this dude should have said if you are busy and mess with team chemistry because there are so many new players you make my list, except Detroit. Not to mention how are the Blues having the worst offseason when they refuse to offer up money for these insane deals. Why would they sign the guys out there when they have young players like Eller, Berglund, and Oshie in the wings? News flash for CBJ fans, STL is building it right with youth, maybe you should have gotten rid of MacLean a long time ago and gone for a real youth movement. Even with the moves Chicago stumbles out of the gate and barely makes the playoffs. CBJ will still stink along with the Blues but at least do it with youth learing on the job and not with new big contracts. The Wings win it all again and Nashville surprises everyone again and makes the playoffs.

Yeah, Shero just doesnt get it, why did he sign Satan to a 1-yr deal when he could have got an older, more expensive player for 3 years…

Andrew Brunette, LW, Minnesota—A 70-point player with sniper skills
He’s hit over 70 once in his career, he’s more like a 57 point player (he averaged 55 in three previous seasons with Minnesota). He also can’t skate or play defense, but Portzline doesn’t bother mentioning that.

Hagman dosen’t even play for Dallas. The research that went into this must have been astonishingly detailed.

Think the pens had a bad off-season?
It was pretty obvious they weren’t going to re-sign Hossa from the beginning. And how can they afford to pay Malone the ridiculous amount he got from TB?
You never know how players will play on certain teams and if satan and fedotenko each score 30 goals then I would say they were pretty damn good editions.
oh yeah, plus he qualified all RFA’s and signed Malkin to a less than value contract.
