Bettman Under Pressure

from Allan Maki of the Globe and Mail,

It was Bettman, sources have said, who went to Moyes on Tuesday and presented a conditional offer from Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf that would have paid down a portion of the team’s indebtedness as long as Moyes walked away.

Moyes walked, all right. He went right to Balsillie and finalized a $212.5-million (U.S.) transaction — with another $17-million for bridge financing — that would ensure every creditor got paid. That has put Bettman between a rock and a cactus, and those in the know say he’s not happy about it.

The thing is: That unhappiness is certain to spread among the owners, some of whom have begun to question Bettman’s handiwork, along with his vision. For example: His decision to have NHL games broadcast in the United States on Versus has been a spectacular dud, despite claims to rising viewership. His decision to keep teams in their current marketplaces no matter how much money they lose has created all manner of stress and strain throughout the league.

“Bettman’s smart,” a source said, “but he’s under tremendous pressure, maybe the most he’s ever felt.”

The emperor has no clothes!!

Ding Dong the witch is dead!!

Balsille may not get the Coyotes relocated to Hamilton, but if his offer is the tipping point that topples the Failed reign of bettman and all his NYC lawyer buddies.  tHEN balsille is a hero in my book.

Hey gary, don’t let the door hit you in the A## ON THE WAY OUT.

i guess the big market owners are beginning to have enough of Bettman’s crap and turning their backs on him. but what he did by taking Moyes rights has owner to whomever he wanted to sell the team to is criminal.

I can understand Bettman being upset - he’s an egomaniac and a control freak, and Balsillie is not controllable and therefore undesirable - but he can’t possibly be surprised.

When presented with “accept this deal and walk away, and you get back some of your money” why not go with “here’s another deal where you get paid back in full” (which is what it seems like he is faced with)?  Moyes probably figures that he has been playing by the rules thus far, and has had enough of the losing money all the time - he’s found an opportunity to get out with fewer losses than the plan Bettman has, and intends to take it.

but what he did by taking Moyes rights has owner to whomever he wanted to sell the team to is criminal.

That is a curious thing.  Just a week or so ago, didn’t the NHL state that they were absolutely NOT in control of the team?  And now they are acting as though they are, and Moyes was just a puppet put in place for show (and his wallet).  If the NHL actually is in control of the team, were they actually running it in February, as one of the city officials said, and indeed running it during the trade deadline?

Interesting.

They know perfectly well he works for the owners of the league.  The issue is that there are 30 owners, and not all of their interests coincide - so how large is the faction he is working for in this particular instance?  A large majority?  Vocal minority?  It isn’t all 30 marching in lockstep regarding the Phoenix Coyotes.

I don’t like Balsillie; I don’t see him as the Mark Cuban of the NHL, but rather more of an Al Davis.  However, I don’t believe that Bettman is working in the best interest of all 30 clubs and their owners.  He’s a salesman who keeps telling them that things are going to keep getting better and better as long as they allow him the reigns.  Bettman is every bit as egomaniacal as Balsillie and doesn’t want an owner that can sway some of the other big market owners who are dissatisfied with Gary’s vision of the NHL.

Bottom line, I don’t want Balsillie owning the Coyotes, but I also don’t want Bettman as the NHL commissioner.
