Bettman Wins Again

from Bruce Arthur of the National Post,
You don’t have to like Gary Bettman, which is lucky, since it’s not like he makes it easy. You don’t have to agree with him on every issue, which is also fairly convenient. I would counsel that you never sign a contract with him, if only because it might not mean what you think it means. But then, that’s unlikely to become an issue.
One thing about Gary Bettman, though, is that you should never doubt that he is the boss, and that he is running the National Hockey League. Never doubt that he is in charge.

That’s a good way of putting it. Bloch says that they shouldn’t read the spirit of the cap into it before he does exactly that.
The big question remains why the NHLPA allowed Bloch to be the arbitrator here, unless they were offering the Kovalchuk contract up as a sacrificial lamb to try to garner either some form of righteous indignation or fan sympathy when the next CBA talks happen.

I kind of feel like this is going to rile up GMs and owners of the clubs in big and good hockey markets more than it will the players. Kovalchuk is still going to get paid, one way or another…

Bettman provides an interesting twist to the NHL. I don’t particularly dislike any of the other teams in the league… but I actively despise what Bettman’s done. So, insofar as I perceive Bettman to be pulling for or against teams, I immediately go the other direction.
-Never really cared for Kovy before. Now I want to see him get a big deal and for the Devils to do it at a cap nukber $1 less than the deal that got voided, just to put it right in Bettman’s face.
-Didn’t care one way or the other about Crosby or the Penguins, but once Bettman went all in for them…. bam! Hope they fail spectacularly.
-Didn’t have an opinion on keeping the Coyotes in Phoenix. Once Bettman went in and was as embarrassing as he was in his soulless quest to keep them there, though… bam!
Etc, etc, etc.
He may, actually be onto something. Why worry about setting up dynasties in a sport when he can cause a significant portion of the hockey fandom to turn against an issue just by sticking his ugly mug next to it?

Let’s not forget, Bettman does represent the interests of the greedy owners.

I didn’t think I could get a second day of enjoyment out of the Kovy decision, but this is a gift that keeps on giving.

You’re not fooling anybody Mrs. Bettman. BTW, I love that you have the courage to style your look after Rocky Dennis. You’re an inspiration.
