Bettman’s Salary Released - How Does Around $7M Sound?

from Greg Wyshynski of PuckDaddy,

Tripp Mickle of Sports Business Journal looked at the NHL’s most recent tax filing and dug up some absolute gold—or at least enough financial information to make you scowl slightly harder when purchasing a $30 officially licensed hat.

Mickle reports that the NHL saw its legal fees rise 48.6 percent during the fiscal year of July 2008-June 2009, to $3.94 million. There was evidently some sort of small-claims court case in Glendale, Ariz. that affected that budget. Something about petty larceny we hear.

The other news concerns what the NHL’s power brokers pull down in annual salary, including Commissioner Gary Bettman:

Doesn’t Bud Selig make something crazy like 25m?

Bettman makes more than TPH.  WTF.  That’s Brian Campbell type of money!

Bury him in the minors, then again it wouldn’t have to be that deep to bury the little tyke.

Too bad the executives aren’t also subject to escrow withholding.

It’s typical of the modern corporation, though. Companies all over are full of a few critical employees who would decimate the operations of entire departments if they all were in a plane crash together, and yet many many companies could lose all their top execs in a plane crash, replace them with other white men in dark blue suits, and no one would really notice a difference.

For all the money they earn, the top execs don’t seem to DO very much for it.

As much as I dislike Bettman running the show, I think don’t there’s anything wrong with his salary. He’s top dog, and like any corporation, he get’s paid as such.  As a being a hockey fan, there’s a lot I don’t like about what Bettman has done for the sport, but he’s there for a reason. Most of the club owners obviously like what he’s doing and reward him for his efforts. Bettman takes the heat for everything, and club owners like that, it takes the heat of themselves, and again reward their fall guy.

Good old fashioned American way.

It makes you sick at first glance, but as Heaton points out Gooddell, Selig, and Stern all make money that make Bettman’s look like chump change.

The idea that Bettman’s salary should somehow be compared with, or be in the same league as those of Selig, Goddall and Stern only makes sense in a world where the NHL’s revenues and profits are equal to those of the NBA, MLB or (ha!) NFL.
