As David Lee blogged about, the Canes won a rough game against the Islanders tonight.
A big hit was delivered by Doug Weight of the Islanders on the Canes Brandon Sutter…

I agree with Pokecheck. Weight did nothing wrong, it just connected really badly for Sutter.
Ouch.

The thing I don’t like about this hit, is Sutter plays the puck up the boards, then races to regain possession….he wasn’t actively carrying the puck when Weight hammered him. If the puck was on his stick, and he had his head down, then I think he’s 100% fair game. In this case, he’s reaching to get the puck back on his stick.
Considering players are taught from an early age to “play the man, not the puck”, I don’t blame Weight for going for Sutter instead of knocking the puck out of reach, but at the same time, in the replays it sure looks like he could have beaten Sutter to the puck in this instance.

Texbook hit in many ways.
Weight skated through the player, elbows down.
Sutter was textbook in how not to skate through the middle of the ice and controlling the puck. Head down, lunging, not aware of the surroundings.
Good mixture for pain.

No fault on Weight. This was a fair check.
But that whiplash? Holy ....!
Get well soon, Brandon.

That hit made my stomach hurt. Dougie didn’t do anything wrong. Still, it was LARGE. Welcome to the NHL,Brandon. First goal, first levelling. Oy and best.
