Bill Daly On The Hudler/KHL Deal

from Craig Custance of the Sporting News,
In an e-mail to Sporting News Today, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly wrote that Hudler lost his free agency rights when he elected salary arbitration on July 5.
“It continues to be our position that Hudler is contractually obligated to the Detroit Red Wings,” Daly wrote in an e-mail to SNT. “It’s just another example of the KHL having no regard for NHL contracts.”

I’m not entirely sure I agree with Mr. Daly. While it stings to have Hudler go, taking a team to arbitration does not equal being contractually obligated to play for them in the following season. Yes, he remains “property of” and “an asset of” the Red Wings, in the most basic senses of the terms, but that hasn’t forced him to honor any sort of agreement for on-ice participation - at this moment.
The team still has to agree to the award (which, obviously, they will), but as of July 30, there is no contract that exists for Jiri Hudler’s services for 2009-10.
It seems a bit like the union is grasping at straws here, and that the KHL successfully slid a player through a loophole.
Also, bad-mouthing the Russian league won’t help future battles. Of course, neither did respecting it, so…

That’s right, Billy Boy. And after the Wings suspend him for failing to honor whatever contract the arbitrator decides is fair, Happy will go to the KHL and get both experience on a top line and a few extra million dollars/rubles/kopecks/whatever. Then, a year or two from now, he’ll come back to the only team he’s ever wanted to play for and, at 27, take a spot on the second line. And there’s not a g.d. thing you or Lil’ Gary can do about it.
Man, nothing makes me smile more than watching Tick Tock stick it to Lil’ Gary and his band of administrative idiots…yet again.

Jeebus, OTC. That was a perfect summation of what I believe is really going on.
