Biron To The Islanders

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

The Islanders won’t be caught short again.

Ensuring stability in nets regardless of the state of Rick DiPetro’s health, the Islanders have signed free agent goaltender Martin Biron to a one-year, $1.4 million steal of a deal, The Post has learned.

The New York Islanders today announced that they have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with goaltender, Martin Biron.

“Adding Marty gives us three bona-fide number one goalies,” said Garth Snow, General Manager, New York Islanders.  “We learned about the importance of stability in our line-up from last year and he now allows us to have another quality starter.”

They have zero faith in DiPietro. But I guess I can’t blame them.

So the Isles now have 7.9 million in payroll tied up in 3 goalies, and still don’t have anyone who can consistently stop the puck? Awesome.

I think he plans on playing all 3 at the same time. Maybe one in net and two on defense? Maybe that will work....

not a bad deal.  so much for the supposed 5 million he was seeking.  I guess he realized milbury was no longer a gm.

Good signing, if nothing else one of those goalies becomes a good bargaining chip before the trade deadline, especially Biron at that price.

It’s funny because last year the Islanders had 3 potential number 1 goaltenders (that weren’t rapidly approaching a hip replacement surgery).  Danis, MacDonald, and (I suppose) Dipietro.  For a team with ZERO defense the two healthy goalies kept the team relatively competitive.  I have no clue what Wang is thinking.  Goaltenders don’t score goals, and in this case don’t stop goals.

It’s pretty funny to see Biron settle for this price, especially at 1 year, when he thought he could get a multi-year deal at $5 million.
