Blasting Fans Of The Leafs

from William Houston of Truth & Rumours,

It seems stupidly arrogant and self-defeating for a sports writer to ridicule his readers, to tell them in so many words that they’re a bunch of dopes. Why would you want to knock the people you hope will read your column?

But there he was, David Shoalts of The Globe and Mail, sneering at the Toronto Maple Leaf fans and heaping scorn on them from a high place.

Shoalts explained in his Saturday column that “your agent” – that’s him – had been cooped up at home for two days and, therefore, was able to put his ear to the pulse of “Leafs Nation” by listening to the radio. And guess what he learned?

“If most fans had their way, Brian Burke would be busy this weekend firing Ron Wilson, trading Nazem Kadri, Tyler Bozak, Luke Schenn and just about any other prospect the Toronto Maple Leafs have, and presto, they would no longer be the worst team in the NHL…

Guide to Being a Leafs Fan

-Shut off your radio.
-Burn the newspaper.

The clowns that give their opinions on the Leafs are even worse than the craziest fan. Howard Berger bashes the city and citizens rather than comment on the team. Damien Cox is bipolar at best. David Shoalts, as you can see from the Globe & Mail article, is completely out of touch. The radio guys are a collection of bitter, scorned former executives with axes to grind, and cynical hacks looking for an easy show by fanning the flames.

Make your own opinions. Mine? The Leafs are terrible on-ice but they have the best group of prospects they’ve had in almost twenty years. Surprise, the team isn’t going to go from terrible to good in one off-season. It isn’t like they traded their first rounders for backup goalies this time. They have one of the most talented snipers in the league who is 21. Just relax and tune out the background noise. It’ll take a bit, but it’ll happen eventually. He may be a pompous ass, but Burke knows hockey.
