from Aaron Portzline of Puck-rakers,
Right winger Stefan Legein, the Blue Jackets’ second-round pick in 2007 and one of the top up-and-coming agitators, has decided to quit playing hockey.
I didn’t believe it either, but it’s been confirmed just a few minutes ago by the Blue Jackets. They got a call today from Legein’s agent, Doug Woods, telling them he won’t be at training camp and has decided to hang up his skates. He’ll be 20 years old in three months.
This story is shocking on so many different levels. Earlier today, I got an email from a Puck-Rakers reader, Bethany, of Bethany’s Hockey Rants. Actually, it was a “forward” of an email she got from an anonymous person in Ontario saying Legein had retired.
After a slew of phone calls to sources throughout the NHL, I finally got somebody to tell be off the record that’s it true. Just a few minutes ago, Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson confirmed it.

On an unrelated note, and since no real hockey news has developed in weeks...Does anyone know a good keeper league to get in, or any other good fantasy hockey leagues besides yahoo and espn?

Wow, that sucks. Does a team get any sort of compensation in a case like this?

I can’t see what kind of compensation would be possible. He isn’t taking on a contract for another team - he’s just plain quitting hockey altogether.
Just before he turns 20 - that’s pretty early to be giving up something you have worked so hard to attain. I sincerely hope it isn’t a decision prompted by a serious health issue.

Hey callmedrw…
if you’re looking for an FHL keeper I’d suggest http://www.geocities.com/spekkio_27

I really wonder what’s up...Though I don’t want it to be a health issue, I also hope it isn’t a ploy to get into the KHL. *shudder*

Don’t really know any details, but at first glance it sounds to me personally like maybe mommy and daddy were viewing the kid as a meal ticket and pushing him so hard, and he just got sick and tired of basically being their retirement. Maybe he’s even doing it solely to spite them. Nothing like that would surprise me in the least, as stupid as parents can sometimes be…
