From the St. Louis Blues,
St. Louis Blues President John Davidson announced today the club has acquired a 2008 3rd round draft pick, 70th overall, from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forward Jamal Mayers.
“I want to thank Jamal for everything he has done for the Blues and the city of St. Louis,” said Davidson. “We wish Jamal and his family nothing but the best in his hometown of Toronto.”
added 7:18am (Paul), from Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,
Blues President John Davidson said the trade of Jamal Mayers late Thursday night is a precursor of something else that could happen today.
“It’s all part of us trying to put stuff together and we’re not done yet,” Davidson said. “This is the start of something ... that’s the best way of saying it. We’ve got other stuff going on, but can’t say anything because it’s not finalized. We’ll try and get that done (today).’’
Davidson added: “I don’t want people to think we just traded Jamal Mayers for a draft pick and that’s the end of us. The more we work toward putting something else together, the more the draft pick position could become a part of (tonight’s) action. We’re working it here and we feel we’re getting close.”

TSN has it online now. We both received the same press release, I expect; I just happened to put it online quicker.
Thanks for grabbing his stats—they surprised me, actually. And perhaps it’s worth noting his salary for the next two years: $1.4 million per season. (He becomes a UFA in 2010.)
I like Mayers, though. Maybe his fortunes will change in Toronto?

The most surprising thing about his stats, to me, is the fact that he has yet to tally a powerplay goal. I fully understand that his role is more of a third line leadership/penalty killing one, but still, you look at his career of over ten years in the nhl and it’s.. surprising.
I mean.. Mark Mowers has gotten his name on the board during a powerplay. So, too, has defensive specialist sammy pahlsson. Hell, even Evgeni Nabokov has more power play goals than Mayers.
Still, I like the guy. Grit-tastic hard nosed forward.

Good move for the leafs. If they’re going with a youth-majority line-up as they’ve been saying, a guy like Mayers will certainly help the youngsters learn how to play without the puck, and give them a viable option on the pk.
Not to mention he seems like a guy that would go to war for a teammate, something the leafs have been sorely missing since Roberts and other left town.

So Toronto acquired a borderline 3rd line forward and they gave up a 3rd round pick to do it… and people think this was a good move?
This explains so much.

Great scoop, Alanah. I don’t see this anywhere else yet (but for the Blues website itself)
My first thought was that a 3rd round pick is somewhat less than what Mayers was worth. Then I looked at his stats. The last three years he had 27, 22, and 26 points, with a plus/minus of -19, -19, and -22.
