Blues Watching Their Dollars

from Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch,

The Blues have been especially careful, adding depth defenseman Mike Weaver to offset the loss of Matt Walker. The team also extended an offer sheet to Canucks restricted free agent Steve Bernier, a pointed payback for Vancouver’s bid on David Backes.

But there are always several GMs out to make a splash. Some are new to their job. Others are fighting to keep their gigs.

Some represent new owners seeking to start their run with some style. And there are always a few big-market GMs with money to burn.

So Gordo, you’re saying that doing nothing = spending carefully? I’m sure ‘Blues Nation’ is loving that.

Interesting.

The addition of Markus Naslund was intriguing.

Interesting? Intriguing? Get off the fence, tell us if you think they’re good or bad. Use a magic 8-ball if you have to.

added still more scoring, something Tampa Bay lacked last season.

Tampa was 17th in scoring last season, better than five playoff teams and tied with a sixth. They were 29th in goals against, better than, let’s see…zero playoff teams. Can you draw any conclusions from that, or is it simply ‘interesting’?

Yeah, and the only thing the Blues will be watching next season is the draft lottery to see where they end up.

The soaring salary cap, combined with bigger dollars available overseas in the Continental Hockey League, will fuel salary inflation. To combat that, mid-market teams like the Blues will have to rely on constant player development to stay competitive.

That seems to work for more than a few teams…

That’s true George, but the Blues have always prided themselves on sporadic player development.

Also, perhaps Gordon means “to become competitive”?
