Boogaard Doesn’t See Eye To Eye With Paul Kelly

from Michael Russo of the Star Tribune,
Boogaard was especially displeased by his own union chief, Paul Kelly, being quoted in a Canadian Press story, saying: “If it’s a staged fight between two superheavyweights that perhaps arranged it a day before the game, I’m not so sure those are the fights that we need to continue to have in the sport. And if they’re the most dangerous fights, we ought to take a good, hard look at those. ......
Boogaard took exception, especially since he pays his union dues.
“It bothers me a lot,” he said Thursday, adding Kelly’s comments are “kind of comical. He should try and do it then and see how the sales for everything goes. It’s goal scorers and the fighters who really push and drive the revenues, I think. I’m not trying to toot my own horn here, but I mean [Marian Gaborik’s] jersey is No. 1 [in Wild sales] and I’m up there, too. I’m pretty sure it’s like that for every other team.”

I bet Boogaard’s jersey sales skyrocket during the playoffs. Since he’s so important on the ice at that time of year. Right? Right??
Give me a break.

Whatever you think about fighting, he has a point. Obviously Ovechkin jerseys are the most common, but I see a lot more Brashear jerseys than one would expect to see if it was all based on hockey skills. Brash has always been a popular player for his home team fans and it isn’t because he’s .21 points per game for his career. The tough guys draw too; we can argue if it’s enough to worry about.

i wish there was more players like Boogaard challenge this guy’s qualifacations to run ‘NHLPA’. the idea of having fighters fight with helmets on is comical.
he’s dead on fact its the scorers scoring highlight goals and fighter fighting sell this sport to hardcore hockey fan.
what kelly and bettman want to do with NHL is to turn it into a family sport with an heavy cost to see it live.

Message to Boogaard: work your skating, work on your puck skills and you may get to play in more than 45 games a season. Yes Boogaard is loved there, most everyone loves the role player, the guy without skill but does the dirty work. But Boogaard needs to understand that even on his own team his role isn’t needed that often, if at all.
