from Terry Frei of the Denver Post,
On a couple of levels — stylistic and strategic — the Avalanche at least temporarily has become what the organization used to belittle.
Conservative. Boring.
With Joe Sakic, Ryan Smyth and Paul Stastny on the injured list, this is the way the Avalanche probably has to play to remain afloat.
The Avs are not only playing Columbus and Minnesota, they’re becoming Columbus and Minnesota.

It’s time for the league to introduce the 3-2-1-0 point system to encourage teams to go for the win in regulation (as well as make every game worth the same amount of points). If you want to separate the contenders from the pretenders, this point system is far better than the current point allocation system.
Shootouts are not going away anytime soon (although the novelty has worn off), however teams are shutting it down in the 3rd period in the hopes of getting a point. Based on what I’ve seen recently, unless a team gets a powerplay in the 5 min OT session, the vast majority of teams will take their chances in the shootout rather than go for the win during 4-on-4 play.
Just my opinion, but if you award an extra point for winning a game in the first 60 minutes, you will see teams open things up (especially when it’s the chance to gain ground in the division).
