Boudreau Takes A Few Shots At The Media

from Corey Masisak of the Washington Times,

Boudreau wasn’t done. When asked about his team’s defensive play being underrated throughout this offensive explosion, it was Boudreau who went on the offensive.

“Just don’t go tell Mike Milbury that or Alan Muir that, because they keep saying we can’t play defensive hockey,” Boudreau said. “We’re good defensively, I believe. Sometimes if you’ve played the game before and you score four or five goals it is really hard to keep that [defensive] pressure on—you are so up for the game it is human nature to relax a little bit. But every week in the power rankings I read Alan Muir saying we can’t play defense, so it is interesting.”

And finally, since Boudreau was on a roll ... why not ask him about SI’s Jim Kelley, who wrote an article criticizing Alex Ovechkin this week?

“I heard about it and I heard it was so ridiculously ridiculous that I was hoping someone would have it or show it to me,” Boudreau said. “I would like to, not attack him but I’d like to at least have a chance at a rebuttal on all the things he said that weren’t true.”

more including Boudreau’s reaction to Carcillo’s action last night…

God, Boudreau is such a loudmouthed stupid, fat f*ck.  I understand the need to defend his team, his players, you know, the Pat Quinn school of coaching, but Quinn is relatively level-headed.  For this fat idiot, it’s always the same: anger, mocking, and so on.  I’m so sick of Boudreau.  Good coach, perhaps (he has a lot to work with), but he’s not an entertaining quote like Quinn, and he’s not very intelligent, either, like Quinn is.

On the contrary, I think Boudreau is a reasonably levelheaded coach than expresses his opinion without a lot of diplomatic fluff. I find it hard to disagree with anything quoted in the article. Carcillo is a moron with a flat learning curve that deserves every punishment he gets, and this:

“I don’t get athletes today—some of them,” Boudreau said. “A clean hit is a clean hit and needs no retribution for that. That is what this game has been built on is the speed and the hitting that has made this game so fabulous. Now you take the hitting out of the game because somebody is going to jump you then it is really stupid.”

is also one of my pet peeves. Furthermore, I’m not impressed by the likes of Millbury, Muir and Kelly either.

The problem with Boudreau is that he’s just plain wrong about his teams defense.  Washington gives up 30.5 shots a game, which is barely better than Toronto’s 30.6.

Is Toronto a good defensive team?

Obviously, the idea of Washington being a mediocre to poor defensive team is a comment made relative to the rest of the teams in the NHL, and compared to those teams, Washington doesn’t play much defense.

There’s nothing wrong with Washington not really focusing too much on defense, either.  WIth that roster, filled with guys who are really good offensively, trying to outscore teams can be an effective strategy in the post-lockout NHL.

Also obviously, it’s a little extreme to expect Boudreau to come out and say ‘yeah, we’re not that good defensively’.  He has a young team that probably can’t handle that kind of stuff yet.  Maybe after they all win something they’ll be more prepared to handle public criticism from their coach.

But still… come on, Coach.  Your top 5 TOI guys are Green, Poti, Ovie, Backstrom, and Semin.  There isn’t an above average defensive player in that handful, and the two lead dmen are below average defensive players.

Sorry BB, but the game has been played this way since you were born.  The Caps, and Bradley’s face, ARE paper soft; and that translates to other teams taking runs, players getting hurt, and no success in the playoffs.  The Caps brittle players had no juice left in the tank last year after getting squashed game in and game out… the jury is out on this team…. and they’ve said to RUN THE CAPS and laugh when they’re down.

Even as a Caps fan, I have to ask how Gabby even thinks this team is good defensively.  Tom Poti alone is worthy of a spot on the Leafs’ blue line…

Also, it’s sad when your best checker is your best player and your best tough guy (Erskine) is one punch away from having his career ended (concussions).

While I’d love to see the Caps bring up a legitimate tough guy like Sugden and help solve the toughness problem, it still wouldn’t help the Caps in the playoffs.  Again, they’ll get run and won’t be able to respond.  Don’t get me wrong, I hope I’m dead wrong on that.  But that’s my gut.  This team is SOFT.

You can still win and not have good defense (see: Tampa cup championship)...it’s called goaltending.  Still…varlamov is flakey.
