Calgary, AB – Jay Bouwmeester played in his 496th consecutive game tonight thus breaking the NHL ironman record for defensemen as the Flames host the Phoenix Coyotes at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Bouwmeester was originally drafted by the Florida Panthers in the 1st round (3rd overall) in the 2002 NHL Draft. He played his first 342 consecutive games with the Panthers starting in the 2003-04 season before he was traded to Calgary on June 27, 2009. Jay played an additional 153 consecutive games with the Flames giving him 495.

I’m pretty sure he wasn’t traded, but signed as an UFA with Calgary.

tbassett, it was one of those ufa rights trade. Floriida sent him to Calgary and he did sign before the UFA period started.
