Bouwmeester Signs One Year Deal

According to George Richards of On Frozen Pond, Jay Bouwmeester has signed a one year deal with the Panthers.

Updated 12:56pm ET (alanah): From from George Richards at On Frozen Blog --

On the surface, this doesn’t look like the Panthers accomplish much since Jay would have received a one-year deal tomorrow anyway. Hearing the deal is for $4.8 million, and the Panthers felt he could have received as much as $5.5 tomorrow.

The one thing this does is create some good will between the two sides. The fact these two could come to some sort of agreement means Jay may be amenable for something else later one. Signing before going to arbitration eliminates some bad vibes that could come out of the hearing.

Something tells me Florida is now going to try to move him. It’s obvious to me that he just doesn’t want to be there, so it would be in their best interest if they send him elsewhere. Otherwise, he could end up being poison in the locker room.

More likely than being poison is probably the desire for Florida to get something before he leaves at the end fo the season.

The interesting question will be what the team does if they are in a playoff position around the deadline and he is a major reason why?

Deal him for something or keep him around and hope against hope that they can make a run in the playoffs, and even if that isn’t enough to convince him to stay, at least it will be enough to gain more fans and increase their profile even after he leaves?

There may not be a wait until Feb for a trade. Why sign a one year deal when tomorrow an arbitrator would give you one? Because he can now be traded, rather than having to wait until Jan to be tradeable with an arbitrated contract. This will be either a very short or a very long period of speculation.
