Brad Richards Traded to Stars

According to Sportsnet television, Brad Richards has been traded to the Dallas Stars.  TSN is reporting that it is not a done deal—it’s awaiting Richards approval.

Update 11:46am ET: TSN,

After much speculation, the Tampa Bay Lightning have finally traded one of their ‘Big Three’ forwards, sending centre Brad Richards to the Dallas Stars.

Richards, who makes $7.8 million a season through the 2010-11 camapaign, waived his no-trade clause for the deal to go through. He signed a five-year, $39 million contract in 2006, with his average annual salary more than twice the $3.4 million he made in his previous deal.

Update 11:53am ET:  Trade also includes Johan Holmqvist from the Lightning, for Mike Smith, Jussi Jokinen and Jeff Halperin (per Sportsnet SMS updates)

The goalie swap that TSN shows is also interesting.  Is Mike Smith the goalie that Tampa needs?

Am I the only one that thinks, while this obviously improves Dallas, it doesn’t improve them THAT much? This is a better deal for them going forward than it is for this year.

As long as they have Turco in net, it’s hard for Detroit fans to take the Stars seriously. Though, now that I say that, he’ll probably carry them to the Cup…

Why would the Stars trade Halpern in that deal? I can understand Jokinen and Smith. The Stars should of put a draft pick and not Halpern.
Well Dallas still wins this trade.

Halpern is clearly a cap-space mover.  Maybe moving him was the only way to take Richards’ huge salary?

Maybe it was in preparation for next season?

Who knows…

Halpern was decent checking center but now has been relaced by Modano in that role.

I still, for the life of me don’t understand how Richards gets paid 7.8 million.

6 maybe.
