Breaking Down The Panthers 3rd Sweater

from George Richards of On Frozen Pond,
So who gets the blame? The Panthers, sure. But a lot of that blame has to go on Reebok. They are the ones, I’ve been told, who did most of the designing. Of course, these are the same folks who thought it was cool to put ‘AFC East’ on all of the Dolphins (and Jets and Patriots, etc) sideline apparel.
Some Panthers jackets simply have Eastern (as in Conference, not the defunct airline) on the back. Like that means anything to anyone but them.
The Reebok people aren’t real hip to what looks good. So it’s not surprising that Reebok (it’s not RBK anymore right? No.) came up with this plain look. The jersey we saw in March looked fake, unfinished. No way this was what they were going to unveil.
Yet that’s what they rolled out. No wonder the Panthers kept it a secret and didn’t have a big photo shoot beforehand. They wanted to bring it out and move on.

The navy blue and baby blue look pretty good together, but where did this color combo come from? Where’s the red? There are some elements here that could work, but only if it were part of an entire redesign (logo, colors, etc.). As it stands, they’re giving up the little identity they have.
And the FLA on the shoulders is truly abysmal.

It is better than several previous versions of the original jersey. I like the cat head with the circle. The FLA. is not so good. People love the Pittsburgh blue and this is a take off on that idea. It could be worse like: Buffaslug, SENS, C… O… L… O… R… A… D… O… from armpit to armpit, or teeny weeny ducks on one of the worst uniforms of all time. OK Vancouver Alien V was the worst>

The problem is that it looks like the third jerseys of St. Louis and Pittsburgh had a (semi-ugly) child and sent it to Florida rather than an independent design. Color scheme could work if some of the details had been fewer, and the ones left, more prominent. So my verdict is anonymous but not horrendous.

it’s Like teams are trying to OUT SUCK every other team in how Ugly their 3rd Jersey is, BUt Fla. has them all beat, NO original color in the 3rd Jersey WTF is that about
at least the Pens 3rd Jersey is a version of the Original Pens colors which were Blue & White, Not Powder blue but at least the color scheme was the same

That’s not entirely correct, Evilpens. The current Penguins 3rd jersey is an almost exact replica of the 1968-72 home jersey including the powder blue colour. Then came the darker blue until 1980.
Perhaps the next third jersey will resemble that theme, though dark blue has been revisited by quite a few teams already.

Have to agree that I thought I was watching the Blues highlights when I first saw these and that they have the pre-black and gold Penguins look. Just curious as to how this ties into the Panthers actual colors?
Tthey would have made a pretty decent THrashers third uniform instead of their roller derby/basketball look.. The logo is okay, but again just like the Blues and Wild alternates. Looks like someone cut and pasted a few different sweaters together to come up with something “original”. Not the worst, but nothing new either.

That’s also not entirely correct. In 1980 they went to black from dark blue.
In ‘73 the Pens jersey went from powder blue to a slightly darker shade. Then in 1977 they went to the dark blue jerseys.

Sorry, but as far as i know, anything team related has to be signed off by the GM. So like most teams with no real history, they stand back and let other people come up with ideas and then approve the first one they see. So while it has Reebok (you’re right, not RBK anymore) on the back, the Panthers are responsible for their choices…
